Frederic Esmonin 2020

Frederic Esmonin 2020

Dear fellow Burgudian-philes,

We've first gotten to know Frederic in 2014, the estate solid line ups of Domaine-own plots including Mazis- and Ruchottes-Chambertin – as well as Lavaut Saint-Jacques and Estournelles-Saint-Jacques. Yes Frederic is the cousin of the other Sylvie Esmonin. The estate has only 4 hectares and his wines still mostly unknown outside of France!

Only three cuvees available for 2020 vintage in minute quantities at unbelievable prices!

Jon

As is usually the case, Frédéric Esmonin didn't have much to say about the 2020 growing season beyond noting that "it was even drier than 2019 and again so dry that we lost a lot of fruit to various wild animals because they were so thirsty! I would estimate that we lost the equivalent of 1 to 2 barrels of Estournelles St. Jacques to the boars and badgers. It's incredible to think, but we began on the 22nd of August, which is not only earlier than 2003, but I can remember vintages where we began more than 5 weeks later! Another interesting aspect is that we had a normal amount of berries but there was just no juice in them because of the dryness and heat that evaporated everything. Otherwise there isn't much to report other than we are exceptionally happy with the results and believe that 2020 is a great vintage that should age much like 1959 did." The 2020s were bottled in October 2020.

The Cuvees :

2020 Gevrey-Chambertin "Les Jouises Vieilles Vignes"
There is a bit more aromatic complexity to the slightly riper aromas of poached plum, spice, newly turned earth and a smoky hint. The supple, delicious and appealingly vibrant medium weight flavors possess fine length on the balanced finish. This mildly more structured effort needs to develop better depth but if it's allowed a few years of bottle aging, more should appear.

2020 Gevrey-Chambertin "Estournelles St. Jacques", 1er Cru
Here too there is enough wood to point out suffusing the ripe nose of cool and ripe purple fruit, anise, earth and mineral reduction. The elegant, pure and lilting middle weight flavors danse across the palate on the beautifully textured, firm and serious finale where a touch of youthfully austerity gradually emerges. This is also worth considering.

2020 RUCHOTTES-CHAMBERTIN, GRAND CRU
* from a .52 ha parcel of 50+ year old vines
Subtle but perceptible wood influence can be found on the spicier still and more elegant aromas of purple fruit, truffle and pretty floral wisps. There is excellent verve to the intense, and intensely stony, flavors that retain very good delineation on the impressively long and less austere finale. This is really quite good and should amply reward extended cellaring.
