The Producer
Domaine de la Renière is a historic 18-hectare estate owned by the Gay family from 1631 to 2018. It is located in Puy-Notre-Dame, the highest point (at about 106m in elevation) in the Saumur region of Loire, with soil characterised by the Turonian limestone, or tuffeau. Grapes, including Chenin Blanc, Cabernet Franc and a little Chardonnay were farmed and sold to negociants, until Thibault Masse and his partner Guillaume Poitevin bought the estate in 2018 and turned the farm into a boutique winery.
Thibault Masse, who amassed prior winemaking experience at prestigious Domaine Guiberteau, Château Latour-Martillac and Château Cheval Blanc, converted the vineyards to organic farming and attained certification in 2021. He embraces biodiversity, minimal intervention and utilises a range of ageing vessels, producing single-plot wines that highlights the unique high-elevation, mineral-rich terroir.
